Everybody knows that the secret to weight loss is to eat a healthy, balanced diet and burn more calories than you consume. So then why are so many people overweight? It''s because making changes is hard and takes time, and most people want their weight loss to be easy and fast. What they may not realize is that ''quick weight loss'' is an oxymoron. If it''s really quick then all that''s lost is water weight, which is temporary. To make lasting changes that result in weight loss, however, is not as hard as they might think.

Start with small, simple changes. Find an activity that you enjoy, like taking up a sport, going for a nature walk or a bike ride, or dancing while you do housework. What you choose to do isn''t as important as the fact that you are doing it at all. Do it at least three times a week, and gradually build up to an hour at a time.

Tweak your diet by adding new, healthy foods or cooking methods. Try switching to a salt free herb blend. These can be so flavorful that you won''t even miss the salt. Try wholegrain breads and pastas. You don''t have to give up steak, broil instead of fry your steak and choose leaner cuts. Cut it in half first, and then add more vegetables to your plate. Choose low-fat dairy products, in time your taste buds will adjust.

Cut back on coffee, tea or other high-caffeine beverages and drink more water. If water seems too bland, add a squeeze of fresh lemon or lime juice to liven up the taste. Read nutrition labels, and avoid foods that contain trans fats or high sodium or cholesterol levels. Eating a high fiber diet can help prevent hunger and overeating.

The word arthritis comes from two words. "Arthro-" indicates joint involvement and "-itis" means inflammation. Arthritis is a disorder of the joints that can be present in humans or animals regardless of age or gender.

There are hundreds of different types of arthritis, including osteoarthritis, which involves bones, rheumatoid arthritis, a debilitating form of the disease, and septic arthritis, caused by an infection of a joint.

The first symptom revealing that arthritis may be the troubling culprit is pain. Tenderness, redness, swelling at the site from extra fluid, and heat over the involved area will include the joint and surrounding area. The distressed joint can be anywhere in the body from the neck to the feet.

The person suffering from this affliction naturally guards the area because it hurts to move it. If the hand joints are involved, simple tasks that might cause pain would be using a key to open a door, typing, writing, and picking up small objects, etc. If the joint involved is in the feet or ankles, walking, exercising, or getting out of bed would present problems.

Rheumatoid arthritis is a type of arthritis that eventually becomes deforming. Most people have known someone whose hand joints are very large, often red, and whose fingers are grossly twisted. It too presents with pain and swelling, and causes extreme systemic fatigue. The symptoms come and go, and affect people differently, but the joints are always affected and can be anywhere in the body. As time goes by, the joints become stiff and inflexible. Rheumatoid arthritis has the anomaly of flaring up with inflammation and pain that is unaccounted for, followed by symptoms that disappear just as fast.

The treatments for arthritis are varied and depend on type, severity, and location, as well as patient preferences. Pharmaceutical agents are often used, as well as many natural treatments.
